Video Shows Alleged Assault of Stepdaughter by Corrections Officer

Law enforcement officials are supposed to uphold the law. They are supposed to protect the public and they should especially be protective of family, but that is not always the case.
A disturbing video captured in Sanford allegedly shows a man, who worked as a correction officer, assaulting his young stepdaughter. The video prompted swift intervention from the child’s aunt and triggered investigations by local and state authorities.
The footage appears to show the man grabbing the girl and slamming her against a car before later striking her again near a garage door. Family members identified the man as the child’s stepfather and said the incident occurred during a visit to a relative’s home. However, no criminal charges had been filed so far.
In the video, the girl’s aunt is seen confronting the man, accusing him of repeatedly harming her nieces. The woman questioned how many times the Department of Children and Families (DCF) had been called in response to his alleged behavior, demanding accountability and intervention.
The aunt said watching the video caused her to suffer a panic attack, describing the footage as shocking and heartbreaking. She emphasized the importance of standing up for the children and ensuring they understand that abuse will not be tolerated, stressing that their safety and well-being must come first.
The Sanford Police Chief said officers were notified about the incident approximately two hours after it occurred, after the family had already left the area. He noted that had they still been present, an immediate arrest could have been made.
At the request of Sanford police, the Lakeland Police Department conducted a welfare check on the child. Officers examined the child and spoke with her and her mother, reporting no visible injuries and no complaints of pain.
It was confirmed the stepfather was employed as a corrections officer with the Florida Department of Corrections. The agency said he is no longer employed as of February 17 and is currently under criminal investigation by the Office of Inspector General. The State Attorney’s Office has requested a complete case file for review before determining whether criminal charges will be filed.
There are several main ways to defend assault charges. While it can be harder when there is video proof of the assault, like in this case, a defense is still possible. Common defenses include:
- Self-defense: The accused acted to protect themselves from immediate harm.
Lack of intent: The act was accidental, not deliberate. - False allegations: Claims were fabricated or exaggerated.
- Insufficient evidence: Prosecutors cannot meet the burden of proof.
- Mistaken identity: The wrong person was accused.
