Polk County Substitute Teacher Arrested for DUI

DUI_Law6

Being a teacher can be a tough job and sometimes after a long day, people use alcohol to wind down and relax. However, arriving to your teaching job in the morning already drunk is frowned upon and can lead to criminal charges. It can also cause you to get fired from your job.

A Polk County substitute teacher has experienced both after getting arrested for a DUI. The incident happened on the morning of January 27 in the parking lot of Lake Alfred Polytech Academy, a STEM magnet middle school located in Lake Alfred.

A school resource officer spotted the 44-year-old man as he attempted to back out of a parking spot. The man allegedly showed multiple obvious signs of impairment, including a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, as police administered a field sobriety test.

The substitute teacher consented to a blood draw. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will submit the sample for testing to determine the man’s blood alcohol content (BAC). The man, from Haines City, faces driving under the influence charge.

Polk County Public Schools stated that the man’s alcohol use was “unacceptable behavior from someone working on a campus.” In that same statement, Polk County Public Schools said that the man will no longer have any involvement with the school district.

How Can a DUI Charge Affect a Teacher in Florida?

A DUI charge in Florida can affect a teacher’s career in multiple ways. Here is how:

  • Professional discipline. A DUI conviction can trigger a review by the Florida Department of Education or the Education Practices Commission because teachers are held to ethical and professional standards. Depending on factors, this could lead to a reprimand, probation, suspension, or even revocation of their teaching certificate.
  • Employment consequences. School districts often have strict conduct policies. A DUI conviction may lead to administrative leave, reassignment, or termination, especially during an investigation.
  • Background checks and hiring. A DUI conviction stays on a criminal record indefinitely if convicted and typically shows up on background checks used for hiring or certification renewals. While a past DUI does not automatically bar all teaching jobs, many districts may give preference to candidates without recent criminal history.
  • Professional reputation. Teachers are expected to be role models. A DUI conviction can erode trust with students, parents, administrators, and the community, which could indirectly affect job stability and future opportunities.
