Man Charged With Sexual Assault of Resident in Senior Living Facility

Assault is a crime that can range from a minor altercation at a bar to rape (in the event of sexual assault). People need to be careful because they can face felony charges in some cases, especially when the elderly are involved.
A recent Florida case involves a man trying to sexually assault two elderly women. A 26-year-old man broke into a senior living facility in Orlando. He then hid inside, waiting to sexually assault a 90-year-old woman. Just two weeks earlier, he allegedly tried to attack a 76-year-old woman in a similar manner. Both women fought off their attacker, causing him to flee.
The 90-year-old victim told law enforcement officials that she had returned from dinner on April 29 and was watching TV in her apartment. She went to her bedroom closet and noticed a shadow. She turned around and saw a man exposing himself.
The man pushed her to the floor, causing a shelf to fall on them. The woman fought back, punching and kicking the man. He attempted to remove her clothes but eventually fled, saying, “I’m sorry, ma’am.”
The woman’s clothing was submitted for DNA testing, which linked the man to another case involving a 76-year-old woman. In that incident, the woman reported waking to find a man in her bedroom. He pushed her down and tried to undress her, but fled when she screamed for a neighbor.
In the following weeks, staff at a nearby senior facility reported seeing someone matching the man’s description. He was lurking around the property, trying to open locked doors and claiming to be visiting a family member.
On May 20, deputies responded to a call about a suspicious person at another senior facility. The man fled through a rear door but was apprehended after a chase.
The man was questioned and he admitted he was seeking older women to “make love” to and acknowledged being forceful. Interestingly, he also reportedly wrote apology letters to both victims.
The man is now facing multiple criminal charges, including attempted sexual battery, battery on a person 65 or older, and burglary with assault or battery.
In Florida, assault charges can range from a misdemeanor to a felony, depending on the circumstances and whether a weapon was used. Simple assault, which is a second-degree misdemeanor, involves intentionally and unlawfully threatening violence with the apparent ability to do so, creating a well-founded fear in the victim. Aggravated assault, on the other hand, is a third-degree felony. It involves using or displaying a deadly weapon, or threatening to cause serious bodily harm. Penalties for assault can include jail time, fines, and probation.
