Man Arrested on Drug Charges During Traffic Stop
A traffic stop is not always a minor situation. Sometimes it can result in major criminal charges, like drug charges.
This is what recently happened to a man from Gainesville. The 52-year-old man was arrested on the evening of June 3 after he was pulled over while driving. During the traffic stop, it was discovered the man had multiple drugs in his possession.
A deputy stopped the man on Northeast 19th Street after noticing he was riding a bicycle in the wrong lane without a red rear reflector. The deputy reported smelling marijuana and the man voluntarily showed a small bag of marijuana in a cross-body bag. However, the man did not have a medical marijuana card.
The deputy attempted to search the man, but the man pulled away. He attempted to run, but fell to the ground. He then resisted the deputy’s efforts to handcuff him. An assisting deputy used a Taser on the man, which caused the man to stop resisting arrest.
Despite riding a bicycle, the man had a significant amount of drugs on him. A search uncovered 25 individually packaged bags containing 14 total grams of fentanyl, 7.3 grams of marijuana, and more than 5 grams of cocaine. The man had more than three times the amount required for a fentanyl trafficking charge.
The man faces multiple criminal charges, including resisting an officer without violence, fentanyl trafficking, marijuana possession, and possession of cocaine with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver. The man was booked into Alachua County Jail the following morning.
Bicyclists and Traffic Stops
In Florida and most other U.S. states, bicyclists can be stopped by police for traffic violations because bicycles are generally considered vehicles under state traffic laws (with some exceptions). - Unsafe riding. Examples include failing to yield or riding recklessly.
