Armed Man Shot, Killed During Domestic Violence Dispute

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage showing the moments leading up to a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Leesburg.
The incident began on August 20 when authorities received a 911 call reporting an armed domestic battery at a home on Morningside Drive. When deputies arrived, they encountered a 32-year-old man who was armed with a firearm.
“Once our deputies arrived, they were confronted with an individual armed with a firearm whose actions forced our deputies to discharge their firearms,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. “All law enforcement personnel are safe and uninjured.”
In the body camera footage, deputies can be heard repeatedly ordering the man to get on the ground. About 30 seconds after the video begins, the man appears to reach for something near his feet, prompting multiple deputies to open fire.
The man was killed during the shooting. No deputies were injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. While the investigation is ongoing, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave. Both are standard procedures following an officer-involved shooting.
Residents in the typically quiet neighborhood said the sound of gunfire left them shaken. One nearby resident said several gunshots rang out, prompting people to rush to their windows to see what was happening. The resident said deputies then appeared to gather near the home and attempt to enter the residence.
