Man Arrested for Assault After Florida Road Rage Incident

Drivers can get intense when on the roadway. When another driver does something they do not like, road rage can ensue.
This recently happened in Florida. A Charlotte County man was arrested on January 12 following a road rage incident that turned physical.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, the 62-year-old man was taken into custody and charged with burglary with assault or battery after allegedly attacking another driver, who lived in the same neighborhood.
Deputies were called to the scene after the victim’s wife reported her husband suffered a bloody face, swollen lips, and bruises from the confrontation. The victim told investigators he had passed a slower vehicle on Kings Highway. The driver became visibly upset and began gesturing.
According to the victim, the man then followed him home on Suncoast Lakes Boulevard. When the victim stopped and rolled down his window to ask why he was being trailed, the man exited his vehicle and repeatedly punched him. A witness also reported hearing Prapotnik threatening to break the victim’s arm.
The man pulled the victim’s arm out of the car, bent it backward, then threw rocks at him before 911 was called. The man was arrested and booked into the Charlotte County Jail. He has since posted bond and been released.
Dangers of Road Rage
Road rage poses serious risks that go far beyond hurt feelings or heated words. When drivers allow anger to take over, their focus shifts from safe driving to confrontation, increasing the likelihood of reckless behaviors such as speeding, weaving through traffic, brake-checking, or running red lights. These actions significantly raise the risk of high-speed collisions that can cause severe injuries or death to drivers, passengers, and innocent bystanders.
Another major danger of road rage is escalation. What may begin as a minor traffic dispute can quickly turn into a physical altercation once vehicles stop. Many road rage incidents involve assaults, property damage, or the use of weapons, including firearms, leading to life-threatening situations. Victims are often caught off guard and have little opportunity to protect themselves.
Road rage also creates legal and emotional consequences. Aggressive drivers can face criminal charges, civil lawsuits, loss of driving privileges, and lasting damage to their personal and professional lives. For victims, the experience can cause lasting trauma, anxiety, and fear of driving.
Because road rage is unpredictable and dangerous, the safest response is to disengage. Avoid eye contact, do not retaliate, keep your doors locked, and call 911 if you feel threatened. Staying calm can prevent a bad situation from becoming a tragic one.
