Florida Man Arrested for Assault, Battery on Girlfriend, Dog

Arrested10

Touching someone without their consent is a crime, and it can sometimes be a very serious one. A Florida man is facing multiple misdemeanor and felony charges for assaulting his girlfriend and her dog.

The Miami-Dade man was arrested on July 28 after attacking his girlfriend and dog at their home in July. The 24-year-old man faces multiple charges, including domestic battery by strangulation, assault, battery, and animal cruelty.

The alleged attacks happened on July 11 at a residence along SW 129th Avenue and 203rd Lane. The couple lived together in the home.  The first incident was over an argument about the girlfriend’s dog. The man allegedly struck the dog with a closed fist and threw it against a wall. The victim then put the dog in its crate.

That was when the man attacked his girlfriend. He repeatedly punched her and placed both hands around her neck in an attempt to strangle her. He squeezed until her breathing was negatively impacted.  The incident did not end there. The man then pushed the woman to the ground and straddled her. He then continued to choke her and slam her body against the floor.  The man then flipped the dog’s crate over with the dog still inside. He then threw the crate outside, and used a hose to repeatedly spray the dog in the face.

The second attack occurred the next morning after the victim woke up. The man began hitting the dog. He then hit his girlfriend with a closed fist before grabbing her by the neck with both hands, strangling her and impeding her breathing.  The woman then left, despite the man threatening to kill her and the dog. She went to a family member’s home and called the police.

The woman suffered bruising to both sides of her neck and her upper arms. The man was arrested that same day. He was taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office South District Station for further questioning. He denied all allegations.

The man was later taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The following day, he appeared in court. The judge set his bond at $8,250 and issued a stay-away order from the woman. While his lawyer stated that he would be posting bond, the man was still incarcerated later that evening.

Florida has some of the nation’s tougher animal cruelty laws. A person who unnecessarily torments, deprives an animal of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates or kills an animal may be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor. Knowingly and intentionally committing an act that results in an animal’s cruel death or causes excessive or repeated unnecessary pain or suffering is a third-degree felony.

Penalties may include up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, probation, and community service.
