Florida Man With Lengthy Criminal History is Back in Jail for Aggravated Assault

InJail

Domestic disputes can get ugly quickly. A disagreement can lead to verbal abuse, nasty comments, physical violence, and even weapon use.

A Florida man with a lengthy criminal history is back in custody after police say he threatened a pregnant woman with a firearm during a domestic dispute. Officers from the Gainesville Police Department responded to a residence in Gainesville after receiving a report that a man had pointed a gun at a woman. The victim told police the two had recently been staying temporarily at another person’s home because they were facing homelessness.

The incident reportedly began early in the morning on April 22 when the 50-year-old man became upset over a missing item. During the argument, he allegedly said he would “rob and even kill someone so he could eat.” He then escalated the situation by threatening the woman’s life, even saying that he was “going to jail today for killing a pregnant woman.” Police say the man pulled out a handgun, inserted a magazine, and pointed it directly at her face.

Fearing for her safety, the woman ran from the home and called 911. She also expressed concern for another person inside the residence at the time.

When officers arrived, they made contact with the suspect, who exited the residence without incident. A search of the living area was conducted with permission from the occupant, but no firearm was immediately recovered. The search was later halted when consent was withdrawn.

Investigators noted that the suspect has an extensive criminal record, including 12 felony convictions and two prior prison sentences. Authorities also referenced a recent incident involving alleged threats with a firearm that occurred earlier in the month.

The man now faces a charge of domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors intend to file a motion to hold Jackson without bond.

The man has served two prison sentences in Florida, one in the early 2010s for domestic battery by strangulation, and the second one in the early 2020s for arson. Not long after he completed his arson sentence, the man was arrested on a felony battery charge for allegedly throwing soda at a woman. While prosecutors dropped the case, the man was convicted of violating a no contact order with the victim.

What Counts as Aggravated Assault?

In Florida, an assault becomes “aggravated” when a person uses a deadly weapon without intent to kill, or commits an assault with the intent to commit another felony.

Common examples include:

  • Pointing a firearm at someone during an argument.
  • Threatening someone with a knife.
  • Using any object in a way that could cause serious harm.
